DIY Patio Lattice Fence

2
Remember this view of the back of my house from my back patio makeover kickoff post?

Outdoor Privacy

Well it’s a pretty big blank slate and I wasn’t sure for the longest time what to do with it exactly. One of the primary problems with it is that there is a water spigot that comes up about 2 feet out of the ground at the end of the patio (if you can see it). So I wasn’t sure what to do here.

Suddenly, it came to me. I would put a lattice “fence” around 3/4 of the perimeter to provide privacy. It wouldn’t go all the way to the ground to accommodate for the spigot (and the fact that they come in 4×8 sheets anyways). Here’s what we did:

  • DIY Lattice Fence Another before view…
  • Patio Privacy We put up 6 fence posts (on sale for $1.97 each!) around 3/4 of the perimeter, leaving a good opening on the one side to walk into. We used a regular post hole digger for this. Andy did most of the work here. :)
  • Patio Lattice How To Then we put up the lattice sheets with a brad nailer. We added 2×4′s to the top and bottom to add weight because the sheets were just blowing around in the wind without them. We also added 1×2′s along the seams to finish it off. Very easy! It went up really quickly.
  • Outdoor Privacy Here is a view looking at the side the opening is on.
  • DIY Lattice Fence Here’s a view of the backside of it.
  • Patio Privacy (Ignore the furniture, that will be changing somewhat). Afterward, my husband had the brilliant idea to attach regular tiki torches that we already had to each post. It looks so cool at night! I also added some climbing Morning Glorys to each post. I took way to long to get them in the ground though so I hope that they’ll be alright. I’m not sure, but if not, I’ll just buy some more or another kind of climbing plant to go all over the lattice.
I just LOVE how it turned out. It looks so good. I’m going to water seal it with just a regular water sealer (Behr or Thompson’s Water Seal) to finish it off and keep it protected. Our neighbors even already commented on how good it looks, they thought we added a whole new deck from their view of our house!

Now, on to filling up that space!
