I needed an affordable and easy solution to some wall decor in my office/craft room. So I came up with the idea of doing a scrapbook paper wall decoration.
Supplies Checklist:
- Self-Adhesive (Repositionable) 20″x30″ Foam Board that’s 3/16″ thick
- Utility Knife
- Ruler
- Scrapbook Paper of your choosing.
- Foam Board Metal Hanger
Step-By-Step Tutorial:
Because the foam board is a 20″x30″ sheet, it makes sense to cut the scrapbook pages down to 10″x10″ to save money on foam board and not have to waste it. You can also save the excess pieces of scrapbook paper for another project!
First we need to cut out our pieces of foam board.
To do this, use measuring tape and make a small pencil mark at 10″ for the short side of the foam board.
Then mark one at 10″ and one at 20″ for the longer side. To get a straight line and better accuracy, make a mark on both the opposite sides as well.
Now get out a long straight edge. I am using a long level, but a yardstick would work just as well, you could also use a piece of molding, or whatever you have that is long and straight.
Connect the lines opposite from each other on the long side.
Then connect the lines opposite from each other on the short side. Now you should have the foam board seperated into six sections.
Place your cutting board under the foam board and turn the foam board horizontally to cut the site with two lines first. You are going to cut it into 3 pieces first, then cut each piece in half.
To keep it from bunching up and keep the edges smooth, position the utility knife at a 45° angle and keep it at that same angle for the entire cut (as seen in the previous picture). If you change the angle, it will start to bunch up and look bad (this is the absolute key to cutting foam board).
If your cutting board isn’t very long, then cut the piece half way down, hold the knife in place, and carefully move the board up so that you have the bottom of the foam board on the cutting board.
Repeat the above process until you have all 6 pieces of foam board cut out.
Flip the first piece of foam board over so the sticky side is up and peal off the backing to expose the adhesive.
Decide what part of the scrapbook paper you want to show (if you have a double sided piece).
Position the scrapbook paper on the foam board making sure the area of the scrapbook page you want to show is on the foam board so it doesn’t get cut off.
Be careful and choose your placement wisely because wherever it ends up, it will stick very well and you’ll tear the paper if you try to get it off. Once you have it in place, smooth out the paper over the entire piece with your hands.
Flip the foam board over so that you can see where the scrapbook paper was placed over the edge of the foam board.
Place it on the cutting board and keeping the utility knife right up against the foam board cut down the paper so that the excess comes off.
Be careful not to cut into the foam board, but keep the blade as close to it as possible.
Do the same thing on all four sides until all the excess is cut off.
Repeat the same process with the other five pieces until you have them all ready for the next step.
Now flip over the foam board so that it is facing down and get out a metal hanger that you’ll be able to push into the foam board.
Position the metal hanger where you want the top of the art piece to go.
Push the metal hanger into the foam board until it is completely flush.
Be sure that the jagged tooth opening is facing up toward the top of the piece, as this is where the nail will hold it up.
In order to hang the piece with a nail push your finger into the metal hanger and grab hold of the top of the metal hanger (where the jagged tooth is).
Carefully pull the top with the jagged tooth out so that there is a little space between the foam board the the hook of the metal hanger.
It’s hanging time! Measure out where you want to hang them and the proper spacing between, mount them.
Enjoy! This is such an easy and affordable project, it’s ridiculous. You could make entire decorative scrapbook pages instead of just scrapbook paper by itself too!
